My review of Giuseppe Sinopoli's Arnold Schönberg recording of Verklärte Nacht and Pelleas et Melisande is below. It is published at Amazon.co.uk, and can be read by clicking the headline of this blog.
I heard Sinopoli conduct live the Statskapelle Dresden, performing e.g. Verklärte Nacht in Italy, Ra-venna, in a place that was not a proper concert hall. Yet all the pianissimos did register in that less-than-ideal venue. This recording, albeit with a different orchestra brings my vivid recollections of that magical night for fourteen years ago back to life. The Pelleas and Melisande is not any worse. His interpretations underline the high romanticism of Schönberg and completely outdo the classic Karajan versions.
